Together, Apart: The Quiet Comfort Of Virtual Co-Working

Discover how virtual co-working sessions in the UK help remote workers—especially women—find connection, balance and motivation in the digital age

It’s Monday morning, and Sarah settles into her kitchen chair with a steaming mug of tea. Her laptop hums to life as she faces another week of working alone from her flat in Manchester. The silence feels heavy until she clicks into something that’s become her weekly ritual: a virtual co-working session where she’ll spend the next hour working quietly alongside strangers who’ve somehow become familiar faces.

Across the UK, thousands of women are discovering the gentle comfort of virtual co-working – not the buzzy networking events or formal meetings, but simple sessions where people log in, work silently together and find connection without the fuss of small talk or self-promotion.

The Shift To Working Alone

Before the pandemic, just 4.7% of UK workers regularly worked from home. By April 2020, nearly half of us were working remotely. While many have moved to hybrid arrangements, a significant portion of professionals – particularly freelancers and solopreneurs – continue working in isolation. According to recent research, working from home has created an unexpected challenge: the human need for presence.

The statistics are telling. Gallup’s research shows that 25% of fully remote employees experience loneliness at work, compared to just 16% of on-site workers. But rather than rushing back to crowded offices, many are finding quieter solutions that help them build meaningful connections from their home offices.

A Simple Answer To Connection

Terry White, co-creator of The Power Pulse, discovered this need through countless conversations with fellow professionals. ‘Through countless conversations and networking, we saw a clear need: a space that offers connection without the commitment of a physical co-working setup,’ White explains.

The Power Pulse launched this month with Power Hour – a one-hour virtual co-working session held every Monday at 11am. Participants log in, set their focus for the hour and work silently alongside others doing the same. There’s no pressure to interact beyond optional pre- and post-session chats for those who want them.

‘That’s how Power Hour was born – a simple, effective idea: show up, sit down, and work – together,’ White says.

Why Working Together Works

There’s science behind why these quiet sessions feel so productive. The Hawthorne Effect shows that people naturally improve their behaviour when they know they’re being observed – even virtually. Meanwhile, body-doubling, where someone works alongside another person as an accountability partner, has become particularly popular among those who struggle with focus and motivation.

White notes the research backing virtual presence: ‘Post-COVID studies have consistently highlighted the impact of prolonged remote work on mental wellbeing and productivity. Research into concepts like the Hawthorne Effect and body-doubling also shows that simply working in the presence of others – even virtually – can significantly boost focus, accountability and motivation.’

The Comfort Of Showing Up

What makes virtual co-working different from traditional networking or office meetings is its lack of performance pressure. There’s something refreshingly honest about logging in from your kitchen table, perhaps still in your pyjamas, knowing that everyone else is simply there to work too.

The format strips away the usual workplace theatre. No need to make conversation about weekend plans or comment on someone’s new haircut. Just the quiet companionship of shared focus and gentle accountability. For women juggling multiple responsibilities, this approach offers a way to maintain balance without added pressure.

Beyond The Basic Session

The Power Pulse plans to expand later this year with Power Peers, offering structured peer support through themed accountability groups, wellbeing check-ins, guest speakers and resource-sharing. It’s recognition that the appetite for connection goes beyond just working silently together – people want meaningful support without the formality of traditional professional networks.

Movement towards more authentic connections mirrors what’s happening across the remote work community. Buffer’s research shows that remote workers value daily meaningful connections, with one community member noting how important it is to ‘hear someone’s voice every day’ to combat isolation. The way we think about meaningful connections both online and offline continues to evolve.

Small Rituals, Real Impact

What The Power Pulse and similar services understand is that connection doesn’t always need to be loud or complicated. Sometimes it’s enough to know that others are choosing to show up too – to their work, to their goals, to the gentle ritual of trying again each Monday morning.

For many women working alone, these virtual sessions offer something more valuable than networking opportunities or productivity hacks. They provide the quiet comfort of not being completely alone, of having witnesses to the small daily effort of doing meaningful work. The digital age has certainly changed how we approach friendship and connection, but the fundamental human need remains the same.

Remote work has fundamentally changed how we approach our careers. These simple rituals of connection might be exactly what we need – not more technology or complex solutions, but the basic human comfort of working alongside others, even through a screen.
