Fashion Revolution Week 2024: a decade of social impact and change

For nearly 10 years, we have been campaigning passionately for a clean, safe, fair, transparent and accountable fashion industry. We believe in a global fashion industry that conserves and restores the environment and values people over growth and profit.

Fashion Revolution

Striding into the vibes of Fashion Revolution Week 2024, let’s take a moment to appreciate this exciting and consequential crusade that has touched and transformed the fashion industry from its foundation. Celebrating a glorious decade of constant advocacy for transparency, sustainability and ethical practices, the Fashion Revolution movement has been born out of the ashes of the Rana Plaza catastrophe in 2013.

Change rising from tragedy

The origin of Fashion Revolution Week unveils a potent story of a global alert raised in response to the profound costs of fashion that are often invisible. The collapse of the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh, owning numerous garment factories within, claimed more than a thousand lives and brought a harrowing spotlight on the severe work conditions endured by laborers.

The echoes of this tragedy ignited meaningful questions, leading to the inception of the Fashion Revolution as an agency for change. Fashion Revolution Week thus serves as an annual week-long commemoration – a memorial for the victims, an awareness platform and a unifier for collective actions aimed at reforming the industry

How to be a Fashion Revolutionary

The theme for Fashion Revolution Week 2024, “How to be a Fashion Revolutionary” invites people to ponder upon the transformational journey of last decade and empowers them to guide the next generation in making informed and responsible fashion choices.

A wide and colourful range of events are organized across the globe, with the goal of engaging, educating, and igniting action. From Malaysia’s green day out at Gaya HQ, Petaling Jaya to the 10-day celebration in Dubai marking the 10th anniversary of the movement – each event is a milestone on the road towards a sustainable fashion future.

Integral to the campaign of Fashion Revolution is the Fashion Transparency Index. Serving as a grading system for brands, the index enables consumers to make educated choices while also holding the brands accountable for their actions and operations.

Sustainability Wave

Over the decade, the fashion industry has made massive strides in terms of sustainability and ethical practices. Two notable trends include the use of sustainable materials, recycling programs, and an overarching aim to establish a circular economy. Plus, there’s a noted shift towards slower fashion cycles, challenging the fast fashion model notorious for its environmental and social impacts.

Who makes your clothes?

As the curtain falls on Fashion Revolution Week 2024, it’s evident that the fashion industry has experienced both social impact and change. While significant progress has been made, the flame of a fashion revolution must keep burning, harnessing the need for continuous transparency, sustainability and ethical practices. The legacy of the past decade forms the cornerstone of a more responsible fashion industry. However, it’s crucial to remember, the real change starts with you. Ask yourself: Who makes your clothes?
