Seven Planets Align in the Night Sky for a Rare Galactic Parade in February

On the sky night of February 28, 2025, we are to be treated to a rare galactic parade: Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, Mercury and Saturn align and all seven planets become visible with the naked eye in the night sky at once.

The night sky in 2025 is a spectacle of celestial marvels, offering stargazers a year filled with dazzling meteor showers, glowing supermoons, planetary alignments and breathtaking eclipses. Even if you are a casual observer, the cosmic calendar is packed with astronomical events and a rare galactic parade that promise to captivate and inspire.

From partial solar and total lunar eclipses to the rare alignment of seven planets in February, 2025 is a year to look up and witness the vast, ever-changing beauty of our cosmos.

February marks the beginning of “galaxy season” in the Northern Hemisphere—a prime time to observe these magnificent cosmic metropolises of gas, dust, and stars. With the new Moon on February 28, the absence of moonlight offers a perfect opportunity to escape light pollution and explore the depths of the universe.

One of the most sought-after targets for astronomers and astrophotographers is the Andromeda Galaxy, our closest major galactic neighbor, located 2.5 million light-years away. Positioned near the Andromeda and Cassiopeia constellations, this stunning spiral galaxy can be seen through a telescope in moderately dark skies or with binoculars in exceptionally dark areas. Under the clearest and darkest conditions, you might even catch a glimpse of it with the naked eye, appearing as a faint, ethereal smudge against the night sky.

If you want to witness the grandeur of galaxies, February’s dark skies provide an ideal window to gaze beyond our own Milky Way and into the vast cosmic expanse.

February 28, 2025- a rare Galactic Parade

On the evening of February 28, 2025, stargazers across the world are to be treated to a rare and awe-inspiring event: a full planetary alignment featuring Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Venus, Neptune, Mercury and Saturn. This celestial parade, where all seven planets become visible in the night sky at once, is a phenomenon that won’t happen again for another 15 years.

Planetary alignments occur when multiple planets appear to line up from Earth’s perspective. While four- or five-planet alignments are relatively common, an event where six or more planets align is exceptionally rare. The last time such a spectacular sight was visible was in 2004, and the next won’t be until 2040.

Unlike some past alignments, this one will be visible to the naked eye, although a telescope or binoculars may be needed to spot the more distant Uranus and Neptune. The event will stretch across the sky, making it a breathtaking experience for both seasoned astronomers and casual stargazers alike.

For the best viewing experience find a dark-sky location in areas with minimal light pollution, such as countryside or coastal locations and look up as the universe is putting on a spectacular show, shortly after sunset on February 28, 2025 . Most planets will be visible without assistance, but a telescope will enhance the view of Uranus and Neptune.

The planets will not form a perfectly straight line but will appear in a broad arc across the sky, following the natural plane of the solar system known as the ecliptic.

Planetary alignments are caused by the unique and varied orbits of the planets around the Sun. Since each planet moves at its own speed and distance, alignments are rare occurrences that depend on their relative positions. This February’s event is particularly special because it includes all the planets visible from Earth.

The gravitational interactions between these planets are minimal, so there is no scientific basis for concerns about cosmic disturbances or major impacts on Earth. Instead, this event is purely a visual treat and a reminder of the vast, dynamic nature of our solar system.

This planetary parade is a humbling reminder of our place in the universe. The night sky has long been a source of wonder, curiosity and inspiration but witnessing this rare alignment is an chance to reconnect with the cosmos.

This year is particularly special as the Royal Observatory Greenwich celebrates its 350th anniversary, marking three and a half centuries of exploration, discovery, and astronomical excellence. To honor this milestone, the observatory will host live-streamed events, stargazing demos, expert talks, and interactive family activities, inviting space enthusiasts of all ages to engage with the wonders of the universe.
