In Conversation with Dame Neslyn Watson-Druée: Women Empowering Women

Dame Neslyn's recent speech at the executive development programme hosted by the International Women Forum (IWF) South Africa, Duke Education Corporation, and IWF UK was both inspiring and powerful. Here is the conversation with Dame Neslyn on Women empowering women. Will you lift another woman, knowing it could change everything for her—and for you?

Have you ever wondered what might change if every woman truly believed she wasn’t alone in her journey?

It’s a question we rarely voice but one that holds profound power. So often, women face challenges in silence, questioning if anyone truly understands their struggles to make a difference and turn their big dreams into a better reality. But what if, instead of competing or standing apart, women came together to uplift, support and empower one another?

When women unite, barriers crumble, opportunities multiply and possibilities expand. Empowerment is not just another word—it’s the spark that ignites resilience, opens doors and inspires others to dream bigger and rise higher.

Dame Neslyn often tells me

“This is the only truth I know: we are stronger together. When one woman stands tall, she lights the path for countless others to follow.”

Dame Neslyn

The question is, what role will you play in this collective journey? Will you lift another, knowing it could change everything for her—and for you?

Dame Neslyn, your recent speech at the executive development programme hosted by the International Women Forum (IWF) South Africa, Duke Education Corporation, and IWF UK was both inspiring and transformative. Can you share the central message of your address?

Dame Neslyn: The core of my message is simple yet powerful: empowering women to uplift other women is a transformative force. It is not just about solidarity; it is about creating a ripple effect that transcends individual achievements and strengthens the collective. When women support one another, they foster resilience, break down barriers, and nurture a culture of collaboration that enables societal progress. This is how we build a world where every woman can flourish, voice her aspirations and achieve her dreams.

What makes this approach so transformative, especially in leadership?

Dame Neslyn: Empowering women creates pathways for increased representation in leadership, greater economic independence and the cultivation of a generation that believes in its potential. It’s not just about advancing individual women—it’s about creating systemic change. When we empower one another, we challenge stereotypes and build bridges for those who come after us. This collective action lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and equitable society.

You’ve emphasized practical strategies for empowering women. Could you share some of your top tips?

Dame Neslyn: Certainly. Here are ten strategies I’ve found impactful:

  • Leadership Opportunities: Actively identify and advocate for opportunities for women to step into leadership roles. Promote their inclusion at decision-making tables and inspire others by serving as a role model.
  • Advocacy: Support policies that reduce gender inequalities. For instance, I created the Mary Seacole Leadership Scholarship, which has enabled many nurses and midwives to rise to senior positions in healthcare.
  • Encouraging Self-Confidence: Women often hesitate to apply for positions unless they meet all the criteria. I encourage women to take calculated risks and grow into roles, fostering an environment where they feel empowered to pursue their ambitions.
  • Sharing Resources: Provide access to training, funding, and career opportunities. Collaboration and resource-sharing are essential to achieving shared success.
  • Creating Safe Spaces: Women must have spaces where they can express themselves without fear of judgment. Avoid the negative habits of criticism, blame, and gossip, which drain energy and hinder progress.
  • Networking: Build communities and networks where women can connect, share experiences, and collaborate. These connections foster solidarity and open doors to new opportunities.
  • Mentorship: Women in positions of influence should mentor others, offering guidance and support to help them navigate their careers and personal growth.
  • Investing in Education: I advise women to allocate at least 1% of their salary to personal development. Continuous learning equips us to seize opportunities when they arise.
  • Celebrating Achievements: Recognizing women’s successes inspires others and highlights the valuable contributions women make to society.
  • Engaging Men as Allies: Gender equality isn’t just a women’s issue—it requires partnership. Men who are committed to supporting women can play a crucial role in fostering inclusive environments.

Your point about engaging men as allies is compelling. Can you elaborate on the importance of this collaboration?

Dame Neslyn: Absolutely. Throughout my career, I have benefitted from the support of men who recognized and championed my potential. Individuals like Sir Ian Mills and Sir David Nicholson have been instrumental in my journey. Encouraging men to join the conversation about gender equality creates partnerships that amplify our efforts. Together, we can dismantle barriers more effectively.

What advice would you give to women who want to begin empowering others but don’t know where to start?

Dame Neslyn: Start small but think big. Empowering others doesn’t require a grand gesture—it can begin with a simple act of encouragement or mentorship. Recognize your own power to influence and inspire others, and focus on creating a culture of support and collaboration. When women unite to uplift one another, they become an unstoppable force for change.

Finally, what vision do you have for the future when more women take up this call to action?

Dame Neslyn: My vision is a world where women’s voices are heard, their contributions valued, and their dreams realized. By supporting one another, we can redefine societal norms, strengthen communities, and shape a more equitable future for all. Empowered women pave the way for generations to come, ensuring a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow.

Thank you, Dame Neslyn, for sharing your wisdom and passion. Your leadership and insights continue to inspire.

Dame Neslyn: Thank you. It’s an honor to be part of this important journey, and I believe in the extraordinary potential of women when we stand together.
