Feeling Good and Happy Every Day: Walking to Zen Your Energy

Putting one foot in front of the other is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to clear your energy, both physically and mentally. Dr Marina Nani looks into Zen walking to help you discharge negative energy.

The crisp winter air bites at my cheeks as I take my first steps along the frost-dusted path. My breath rises in soft clouds, mingling with the pale morning mist that clings to the trees. Each step crunches against the frozen ground, a rhythmic sound that echoes in the quiet stillness. This is my ritual—my way of shedding the weight of the day, of untangling my thoughts, of clearing my energy.

I left the train station a while ago and I stopped twice to take a few pictures. Ahead, the silhouette of an old English castle rises against the wintry sky, its stone walls bathed in the soft glow of the low-hanging sun. The wind whispers through the bare branches of old oak trees lining the path, their skeletal limbs stretching toward the heavens. A light dusting of snow covers the castle’s turrets, a reminder that the season is deep in its slumber.

Walking here is a return to myself. With every step, I draw in the crisp, clean air with a sense of renewal. With every exhale, I release tension, doubts and the energy I no longer need. The castle, standing strong through centuries of storms, reminds me of the power to weather anything and still stand tall.

Some days, I walk to quiet my mind. Other days, I walk to connect with the rhythm of life beyond the noise of a busy world. But every time I walk, I return feeling lighter, as though the weight I carried at the start of the path has melted into the earth beneath my feet.

Walking to Discharge Negative Energy

Putting one foot in front of the other is not just walking but one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to clear your energy, both physically and mentally. Research has shown that regular walking regulate circulation, reduces stress and boosts that feel good factor. But beyond the physical benefits, walking can also help clearing emotional blockages, grounding your energy and restoring balance.

Scientific evidence suggests that movement, particularly walking, helps to regulate the nervous system by reducing levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) while increasing endorphins, which promote feelings of relaxation and happiness. When you walk, your body releases tension stored in muscles, and your breath deepens, allowing you to let go of stagnant or negative energy.

A study from the American Psychological Association (APA) found that walking, especially in nature, significantly reduces the cycle of negative thoughts that can drain your mental energy. If you’ve ever felt stuck in a loop of overthinking, a brisk walk can help shift your mindset and clear that mental fog.

The Science of Grounding: Walking Barefoot

Walking barefoot, also known as “earthing,” has been studied for its ability to restore the body’s natural electrical balance. The Earth’s surface carries a subtle electrical charge and when your feet make direct contact with the ground, electrons are absorbed into the body.

A study published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health found that grounding helps neutralize free radicals, reduce inflammation and improve mood. Walking on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil for just 30 minutes a day can help you feel more centered, energized and connected.

Walking Meditation: An Energy Reset

Combining walking with meditation deepens its energy-clearing effects. A practice known as “walking meditation” is commonly used in Zen and mindfulness-based therapy. In this practice, you focus on each step, your breath and your surroundings, allowing your mind to release cluttered thoughts.

  • Walk and deliberately pay attention to how your feet connect with the ground.
  • Breathe deeply, in sync with your steps.
  • If thoughts arise, acknowledge them and let them pass without attachment.
  • Focus on a mantra, such as “I release, I receive” or “With each step, I feel lighter.”

A Harvard Medical School study found that mindful walking reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression while improving cognitive function. It also lowers blood pressure and improves heart rate variability, both key indicators of stress reduction.

Walking in Nature: The Ultimate Energy Detox

I love walking in natural settings, from forests to country lanes and along rivers or by the ocean. When in Japan I went to practice Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), which has been scientifically proven to reduce stress hormones, boost immune function and clear your energy.

A study in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that people who walked in nature for 20 minutes had significantly lower cortisol levels than those who walked in urban environments.

Being surrounded by trees increases the absorption of phytoncides—organic compounds released by plants that have been linked to improved immune response and relaxation.

Walking- a Path to Energetic Freedom

To make walking an intentional energy-clearing practice, you can incorporate simple rituals:

  • Walk at sunrise or sunset to align with natural energy cycles.
  • Carry a note book or journal with you to write down ideas that might come to mind. Personally I keep a Zen Journal for my walks.
  • Set an intention before your walk, such as “I release all that no longer serves me.”
  • Visualize negative energy leaving your body with each step.

Walking is more than just a form of exercise; it is a sacred, science-backed practice for clearing your energy, restoring balance and connecting with yourself and the world around you. Whether you walk mindfully, in nature, or barefoot, each step becomes an act of renewal—helping you release what weighs you down and make space for fresh, vibrant energy.

Walking is my sanctuary. My sacred time for self-reflection. My reset button. I hope that as you read this, you too will feel the urge to step outside, take a breath of fresh air and let the world around you wash away all that no longer serves you. Let’s walk together, in spirit, to enjoy the energetic freedom of your zen self.
