Feeling Good and Happy Every Day: Re-imagine Life After 50

After 50, many women believe their days of firsts are over. Dr Marina Nani is reflecting on re-imagining life on your own terms to start feeling good and happy every day.

I catch my reflection in the window, morning light streaming through the cold air. Each silver strand in my hair tells a story, every line around my eyes holds a memory. But the woman looking back at me feels like a stranger. After decades of knowing this image, how can it look so unknown to me?

The roles I played in my life started to cascade through my mind like falling dominoes – woman, wife, mother, widow, friend, shoulder to cry on, ATM, leader, problem-solver. I’ve worn these labels like second skins, layered one atop another until I could barely breathe beneath their weight.

Now, in the sacred silence of this morning, a question echoes: When everyone stops needing me, who am I? My throat tightens. I have no answer.

Where is the time gone? This didn’t happen in a single moment. It was more like watching sand slip through an hourglass – so gradual you hardly notice until suddenly, the top is empty. Between packing lunches and wiping tears, between deadline meetings and high speed worries, pieces of myself disappeared. Remember that girl who used to dance barefoot in the grass? The one who stayed up late reading poetry? When did she slip away?

The life I built glows with warmth – birthday candles and graduation smiles, tender kisses and fierce hugs. I wouldn’t trade it. But standing here, with my arms empty and the house echoing with silence, I realize I always gave it all. How much of myself I gave away to build this beautiful life? Is anything left of me, for me?

I tried drowning the silence in noise – leading thousands of sales, remodeling rooms, anything to avoid that persistent whisper: Who are you now? But in the predawn hours, when the world grows still, the question finds me again.

Then one rainy afternoon, I discover my old journals in the attic. The pages crackle with youth and possibility – dreams of seeing New York at midnight, writing stories that change lives, mastering Chopin’s nocturnes. My fingers trace the happy handwriting and tears splash onto the yellowed pages. Not tears of loss, but of joy. I feel her stirring inside me, this dreamer I used to be. She’s been here all along, waiting patiently for me to remember who I am destine to be.

The future begins in whispers. A solitary walk where I stop to watch the sunset. A blank journal that slowly fills with thoughts I’d forgotten how to voice. A painting class where my hands tremble holding the brush, but oh, how the colours sing.

Some mornings I wake up electric with possibility. Others, doubt creeps in like a cold draft – aren’t I too old for new beginnings? But then I remember: a butterfly doesn’t apologize for emerging from its chrysalis, no matter how painful transformation is.

I’m learning to greet the woman in the window like an old friend returning from a long journey. She’s weathered storms I never imagined surviving. Her laugh lines run deeper now, but so does her courage. She’s finally learning that taking care of herself isn’t selfish – it’s sacred.

To you, reading this, feeling lost in the roles you play: your essence remains exquisite. That spark you think is gone? It’s still waiting to bloom. Your dreams haven’t expired – they’ve been ageing like fine wine, growing richer with time.

Begin again. Stumble. Fall. Retreat. Rise. The most extraordinary chapter of your story isn’t the one behind you – it’s the one you’re about to write. Years from now, another woman will find your story like a message in a bottle, carried on the tide of time and feel inspired to share the lessons she learned from her own life. Take the next step.

Re-imagine life on your own terms this time round. The woman you’re destined to be is waiting to welcome you home.
