Military Voices Unite Through Powerful New Literary Collection
Military veterans' collective voices shine through in 'A Seat at the Table: Stories and Poems by Veterans'. The anthology bridges understanding through intimate military experiences.

Military veterans’ collective voices shine through in a remarkable new anthology that brings together stories and poems from service members spanning multiple generations and conflicts. The Veterans’ Writing Group of San Diego’s fifth publication, ‘A Seat at the Table: Stories and Poems by Veterans’, represents a decade of dedication to preserving and sharing military experiences through the written word.
A Legacy of Service Through Stories

The collection features contributions from veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the War on Terror and various peacekeeping missions, offering readers intimate glimpses into the varied experiences of military service. These personal narratives and verses create bridges of understanding between civilian readers and those who have served.
The anthology’s placement in prestigious institutions like the Library of Congress, USS Midway and USS Tripoli libraries reflects its cultural significance and historical value.
Through this initiative, over 4,000 books have reached veterans, military associations and bases, creating a rippling effect of connection and understanding through literature.
The Power of Collective Storytelling
‘Our writers, along with other supporters, have helped to raise funds to donate over 4,000 copies of our books to veterans, military associations and military bases’, notes Garry Garretson, president of the Veterans’ Writing Group. He emphasises how individual contributions combine to create something greater: ‘All of us, whether experienced or beginners, contribute to the creation of a collective work that is greater than the sum of its parts’.
Writing as a Path to Healing
The power of veterans’ writing groups extends beyond simple storytelling. Research shows that creative writing can serve as a valuable tool for processing military experiences and building community among veterans. These writing communities provide safe spaces for veterans to share their stories, find their voices and connect with others who understand their experiences.
Studies on veterans’ mental health have highlighted the therapeutic benefits of creative expression, making initiatives like the Veterans’ Writing Group increasingly vital. The group’s success in publishing five collections over ten years demonstrates the sustained need for such creative outlets.
The anthology joins a growing movement of dedicated writing spaces that nurture creativity and community. These literary gatherings provide both artistic development and emotional support, creating lasting bonds among participants.
Supporting Military Families Through Literature
The impact of these writing initiatives ripples beyond individual authors to touch entire military communities. Support for military families takes many forms, and literary expression has emerged as a powerful medium for connection and healing.
Through carefully crafted stories and poems, veterans share experiences that might otherwise remain unspoken, creating valuable historical records while fostering understanding across generations. As these collections find homes in libraries and institutions across the country, they ensure that veterans’ voices will continue to resonate with future readers.
