Superfine: Tailoring Black Style
“This spring’s event will mark the opening of the exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, a profoundly scholarly show centering an important legacy of Black-led sartorial innovation and creative expression that continues to inspire and shape our world today.”

This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” pays homage to the rich history and influence of Black fashion, particularly the art of tailoring, drawing inspiration from Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. “Slaves to Fashion” is a groundbreaking cultural exploration of the Black dandy—a figure who has long blended elegance with resistance, identity with performance.

From his roots in Enlightenment-era England to his reimaginings in today’s global art scenes, the Black dandy has stood at the intersection of fashion, politics, and self-expression. Monica L. Miller’s study brings to life iconic personalities like Julius Soubise, a formerly enslaved man known in 18th-century London for his diamond-buckled, red-heeled shoes and flamboyant flair, and Yinka Shonibare, the celebrated Afro-British artist whose work and personal style playfully and powerfully reframe what it means to be a Black dandy today.
What began in the 1700s as an imposed image where Black men were dressed up by their employers to signal wealth and exoticism soon became a tool of reinvention. These so-called “luxury slaves” didn’t just wear the clothes, they reimagined them, blending uniform with creativity and sparking what would become a long tradition of Black sartorial subversion.
The accompanying dress code “Tailored for You,” invites attendees to embrace personalized interpretations of classic menswear, encouraging a blend of traditional suiting with individual flair.
Guiding this sartorial celebration are co-chairs Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and the ever-iconic Anna Wintour. LeBron James joins as an honorary chair, adding to the evening’s star-studded leadership.
“Dandyism can seem frivolous, but it often poses a challenge to or a transcendence of social and cultural hierarchies. It asks questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power. The exhibition explores this concept as both a pronouncement and a provocation. The exhibition title refers to ‘superfine’ not only as the quality of a particular fabric—’superfine wool’—but also as a particular attitude related to feeling especially good in one’s own body, in clothes that express the self. Wearing superfine and being superfine are, in many ways, the subject of this exhibition. And the separateness, distinction and movement between these two states of ‘being’ in the African diaspora from the 1780s to today animates the show.”
