In the weeks before the new year, many mornings begin in the dark. You wake to a cold room, open a full wardrobe and still feel you have nothing to wear. A few small habits change that, and the effect reaches beyond your clothes. What you wear shapes how you stand, how you speak and how other people respond to you, and on a grey morning that matters more than ever.

## Tomorrow's Outfit Chosen Tonight

Every choice you make in the morning uses up a little of your attention for the day. Choose tomorrow's clothes before bed, check the weather forecast, and hang the full outfit, shoes and coat included, where you can see it.

Your morning becomes shorter and calmer, and you start the day with one decision already made.

## A Wardrobe Organised by Outfit

Hang the things you wear together side by side, and put the pieces you wear most at eye level. Move summer clothes to the top shelf, a spare room or under the bed.

When you open the wardrobe, you see only clothes that suit the season and work together.

## Layers Instead of One Heavy Jumper

Winter days swing from a cold platform to an overheated office. Thin layers trap warm air between them and let you adjust through the day: a fine merino or thermal base, a shirt or knit, and a coat that fits over both.

Natural fibres such as wool keep you warm without making you sweat, and they need washing less often.

## One Colour on a Grey Day

Dark winter skies drain colour from everything around you. A single piece of colour, such as a scarf, a jumper or a lipstick, lifts your face and brightens your mood, and it makes the people you meet respond to you with more warmth.

Choose the shade that makes your skin look rested. Deep jewel tones such as emerald, burgundy and sapphire suit most people in winter light.

## A Coat That Earns Its Place

You wear your coat more than anything else from November to March, and it is often the first thing people notice about you. One well-cut coat in a neutral colour, with room for a jumper underneath, does more for your winter wardrobe than five cheaper ones.

Brush it after wearing, hang it on a broad hanger and give it room to breathe.

## Ten Minutes of Care on Sunday

Clothes last longer and look better when you look after them. Spend ten minutes each Sunday on care: remove bobbles from knitwear with a fabric shaver, steam creases from a shirt, polish your shoes and sew on the loose button.

Leather shoes and boots need protection from rain and road salt in winter. A coat of polish or protective spray once a week keeps them supple.

## Something Comfortable to Change Into

How you dress at home affects how you feel in the evening. Changing out of work clothes into something soft and warm tells your body the working day has ended.

Keep a set of comfortable clothes you actually like, rather than the oldest things you own, and change into them as soon as you come home.

## One Piece Out for Every Piece In

Christmas brings new clothes, and the wardrobe fills up fast. Each time something new comes in, take one thing out and put it in a bag for a charity shop.

[By New Year's Day your wardrobe will hold fewer things](https://richwoman.co/article/8-everyday-home-routines-for-the-last-seven-weeks-of-the-year), and more of them will be things you love to wear.
