If you have ever flown into a great city after dark, you will remember the moment. For most of the descent, your window shows nothing but black. Then the plane banks, and the whole city appears beneath you at once. Avenues run in gold, bridges stretch across a dark river and a million windows glow where a million lives carry on. You cannot see a single face, yet you feel every one of them.

A good story does the same thing inside your mind. A list of facts lights one small window at a time, and by morning most of them have gone dark. A story switches on the whole city. The parts of your brain that hold memory, emotion, movement and even smell begin to glow together, joined by the streets between them.

That is why you cannot repeat a single figure from the last presentation you sat through, yet you can still retell a story a friend told you ten years ago. You can still see the kitchen in a story your grandmother told and smell the rain in a friend's account of a lost afternoon. A city you have seen lit up is one you never forget.
