Paula Nadelstern still lives on the block in the Bronx where she was born. For close to forty years she has been cutting printed fabric into minute pieces and rejoining them into spinning, symmetrical patterns that behave like the view down a kaleidoscope. On July 31 a retrospective of that work, Paula Nadelstern: Master of Symmetry, opens at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, and runs until December 30.

Quilts spent most of the twentieth century filed as craft: domestic, useful, women's handwork, and well outside the rooms where art gets argued over. That has shifted slowly, and mostly through individual bodies of work that were hard to explain away.

In 2009 the American Folk Art Museum in New York gave Paula a solo show, Kaleidoscope Quilts: The Art of Paula Nadelstern. It was [the first one-person exhibition the museum had given to a contemporary quilt artist](https://folkartmuseum.org/exhibitions/kaleidoscope-quilts-the-art-of-paula-nadelstern/).
