There is a sequence that most people get backwards. They assume they will feel good once they have made enough money. Research suggests the reverse is closer to the truth.

Sonja Lyubomirsky, a psychologist at the University of California Riverside, spent years reviewing the relationship between happiness and professional performance. Her findings, published in the Psychological Bulletin, showed that happy people do not just enjoy their work more. They earn more, receive better performance reviews, negotiate more effectively, and are more likely to complete complex tasks under pressure. The mood came first. The income followed.

This is not a claim that cheerfulness pays the mortgage. It is a more precise observation: the cognitive and behavioural states that come with genuine wellbeing, including broader thinking, higher tolerance for difficulty, and stronger social bonds, are exactly the states that allow skill-building to succeed. You cannot separate them.
